Cluster of dark Isabella grapes hanging from a vine in southern Moldova's wine country.

Southern Moldova: the oldest wine castle, a small-batch family winery, and a 6,000-year-old wetland.

The country's wine-and-water corner — Château Purcari (founded 1827 by Tsar Nicholas I), the small-batch Et Cetera around the corner in Crocmaz, the Cahul thermal spa on bromine-iodine mineral springs, and Lake Beleu in the Lower Prut Ramsar wetlands with 200+ bird species. Distinct cultural identity: Bessarabian-Bulgarian + Gagauz minorities, warmer climate, Romanian and Ukrainian river borders.

Cahul thermal spa

The town of Cahul (~30,000 residents, ~175 km from Chișinău) runs on bromine-iodine mineral springs used for balneotherapy, mud baths, and hydrotherapy. Primary facility: the "Nufărul Alb" Balneotherapy & Well-being Centre — hospital + hotel + leisure complex under one roof.

Climate: Hot-Summer Continental. Warm summers (July peak ~28 °C), freezing winters (January lows ~-5 °C). Spring + autumn are the comfortable visit windows. A small international airport sits 8 km southeast of the town — no scheduled commercial flights as of 2026.

Lake Beleu — Lower Prut Ramsar wetlands

Moldova's largest natural lake; relic of the prehistoric Danube lagoon, age 5,000–6,000 years; 5 km long × 2 km wide; avg depth 0.5–1.5 m, max 4.2 m. The anchor of the Lower Prut Scientific Reserve (founded 1991); the entire reserve is a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance (designated 2000, Position 1029).

Bird species
196+ recorded (45 in Moldova's Red Book); peak migration counts 200+ — herons, cormorants, ducks, gulls, swans, terns, thousands of pelicans in season.
Fish
27+ species — the lake is southern Moldova's most important fish-breeding nursery.
Access
Via Slobozia Mare (Cahul district) or Văleni. Tourist access restricted to designated areas only.
Best months
April–September for migration peaks and the white water-lily bloom.

Two visitor routes — a land route from a viewing platform on the slopes above the lake, and a water route through reed beds and water-lily fields when the water level allows.

Getting there from Chișinău

Drive

  • Purcari: ~100–120 km via R30; ~2 h.
  • Cahul: ~175 km via M3; ~3 h.
  • Lake Beleu / Slobozia Mare: ~175 km via M3 + R34; ~3 h, with the last km on minor roads.

Bus / marshrutka

  • To Cahul: regular minibuses and coaches from Gara Centrală; 70–160 MDL depending on service grade; 2.5–4 h.
  • No direct public transport to Purcari or Et Cetera — book a winery shuttle, take an organised day-tour, or hire a taxi for the round trip.

No train

There is no passenger train from Chișinău to Cahul as of 2026. The Cahul–Giurgiulești line opened in 2008 but service was withdrawn in 2013. The only useful CFM passenger services from Chișinău today are the international trains to Bucharest (daily) and Kyiv (2–3× weekly).

Organised day tour

Combined Purcari + Et Cetera + Lake Beleu tours from Chișinău run as ~10–12 h experiences with English / RU / RO guides — operators: Viator, GetYourGuide, wine.md, byfood.com.

Where to eat

At the wineries

  • Château Purcari restaurants — two on-site dining halls plus the terrace; homestyle Moldovan + European; Purcari wines on a separate list.
  • Et Cetera restaurant — small-plate Bessarabian; marinated trout, vineyard salads, Napoleon dessert. Book ahead.

In Cahul

  • Restaurant Pelican — local Bessarabian, popular with travellers pairing lunch with the Beleu visit.
  • Stradivarius · Vatra Cahulului · Tradiționala — town centres for plăcinte, sarmale, zeamă with mămăligă.
  • Spa-hotel meals at Nufărul Alb on half-board packages.

Bessarabian classics: zeamă, plăcinte, mămăligă, sarmale, friptură. Southern shorpa (Gagauz lamb stew, see Gagauzia) is the regional crossover.

Where to stay

Wine castle stays

  • Château Purcari Hotel — 13 chalet doubles, wine bar, two restaurants, tennis courts, lakes; airport shuttle on request; 1,000 MDL damage deposit at arrival.
  • Et Cetera guesthouse — small (rooms by request only), panoramic vineyard rooms, pool, lavender fields; book 3–4 weeks ahead.

Cahul + budget

  • Nufărul Alb Hotel & Spa — full-board balneotherapy packages, mineral pool, mud treatments.
  • Hotel Cahul-Park + Hotel Plai — mid-range town-centre options.
  • Cahul guesthouses + rooms-for-rent: €15–30/night, concentrated around Bulevardul Victoriei and the central market.

Day-trip alternative: feasible as a single 12-h push from Chișinău if you self-drive or take a guided tour, but the south rewards overnighting — sunrise birding at Beleu and a leisurely Purcari tasting both work better with an evening start.

Bessarabian cuisine

The south's traditional menu — most appear in every roadside restaurant, but the southern Bulgarian and Gagauz minorities add their own twists.

Local festivals

  • Nufărul Alb International Folklore Festival — biennial in Cahul; XVIII edition was 2–5 July 2025; next edition expected 2027 (no 2026 edition). Folk ensembles from ~11 countries.
  • Cahul Municipality Day — 2 July annually; concerts and fair (coincides with day 1 of Nufărul Alb in festival years).
  • Castel Mimi Rosé Day Festival — annual at Castel Mimi (Bulboaca) — see wine tours.
  • National Wine Day in Chișinău — first weekend of October; Purcari + Et Cetera both have tasting stalls (covered on events).

Full calendar on events.

FAQ

Can I take the train to Cahul?+
No. The Cahul line was built in 2008 and passenger service was withdrawn in 2013. As of 2026, only the bus runs south.
How long does a Purcari visit take?+
40-minute tour + tasting; add a meal in the on-site restaurant and the whole experience is ~3 hours. Overnight if you want to taste through more of the catalogue.
Is Et Cetera worth the side-trip from Purcari?+
Yes — Crocmaz is ~25 minutes from Purcari, the small-batch list is wildly different from Purcari's industrial scale, and the on-site food is some of the best in southern Moldova.
Can I just turn up at Lake Beleu?+
No. Tourist access is restricted to designated routes, arranged through the Reserve headquarters in Slobozia Mare. Plan ahead.
Is the Cahul spa worth a trip?+
If you're already in the south for wine, yes — a half-day treatment package is a restful buffer between vineyard visits. Otherwise the spa alone is a niche destination.
Best month for Lake Beleu?+
April–June for migration peaks and water-lily bloom; September is quieter and still rich for resident species.
