Stone-walled medieval fortress on a green hill above the Dniester river valley.

Soroca: a perfectly circular fortress, the Roma mansions overhead, and the cliff-cave monasteries on the way.

Northern Moldova in one trip — the EU-restored medieval fortress on the Dniester, the ostentatious Roma "Gypsy Hill" mansions, the 29.5 m Candle of Gratitude, and two of the country's most dramatic cliff-cave monasteries (Saharna and Țipova) within striking distance.

Top sights

Soroca Fortress

Built in 1499 by Ștefan cel Mare in wood, then rebuilt in stone 1543–1546 by Petru Rareș — a perfectly circular footprint, 30 m diameter, 3 m thick walls, five bastions spaced equidistantly, optimised to deflect projectiles. Recently restored with EU support; modern visitor facilities; now a "historical and architectural monument of national importance." Played a role in the Great Turkish War, the 1711 Pruth Campaign, and the 1735–1739 Russo-Turkish War.

Address
Strada Independenței 78, MD-3001, Soroca

Ticket
~30 MDL reported after the EU restoration; older sources cite 10 / 5 MDL. Confirm at the office.
Hours (historic)
Wed–Sun 09:00–18:00, lunch break 13:00–14:00 — verify on the day.

Annual festivals at the fortress: the "Al Cincilea Turn" medieval festival in August (around Independence Day), the Soroca Jazz Festival in late June, and the National Apple Festival in autumn.

Roma Hill (Dealul Țiganilor)

The hilltop neighbourhood west of Soroca's centre, occupied by Moldova's largest Roma community. The mansions copy famous global buildings — St Peter's Basilica, the US Capitol, the Bolshoi Theatre — in a deliberately ostentatious style, home of the self-styled "Gypsy King" Arthur Cherari.

No entry fee; visitors wander the streets. Best light at sunrise or sunset for photography.

Etiquette: prefer Roma to Gypsy; ask permission before photographing people or homes — these are real residences, not a theme park. Bring small lei if you'd like a palm or card reading from a local elder.

Candle of Gratitude (Lumânarea Recunoștinței)

29.5 m stone candle monument with a small Orthodox chapel inside, set on rocks above the Dniester south of the centre. Conceived by writer Ion Druță and inaugurated on 27 March 2004 — 86 years after the 1918 union of Bessarabia with Romania. Honours the anonymous heroes who preserved Moldova's language and culture across centuries of empire.

Approach
656 steps from the lower parking area off the highway — or drive up via Gypsy Hill and reach it on the level.
Chapel
Small fee; no photos inside (Orthodox custom).
Visible
At night, from Otaci (north) to Camenca (south) along the Dniester.

Ion Druță's ashes are interred at the monument's base.

Saharna monastery + waterfalls

The Holy Trinity Monastery — 110 km north of Chișinău on the right (western) bank of the Dniester, set in a 670-hectare natural reserve. Founded 1776 by monk Bartholomew; closed by the Soviets in 1964 (repurposed as a hospital + storage), reopened 1990. Three churches — Holy Trinity, the cave Church of the Annunciation, and Nativity of Theotokos. Approximately 22 waterfalls on the Saharna river; the highest (~10 m) forms a pool locally called "Gypsy Hole."

Entry
Free
Trail
Steep + rocky from the lower monastery up to the cave + the highest waterfall — sturdy shoes; can be slippery after rain.
Best months
May–August for waterfalls (low water in September).

Țipova cave monastery

95 km northeast of Chișinău; carved into cliffs 90–100 m above the Dniester's right bank. The largest cave monastic complex in Moldova and among the largest in Eastern Europe. Three rock-hewn chambers — the Elevation of the Holy Cross (11th century, oldest), monastic cells, and the Dormition of Our Lady (15th century, newest — houses the active church + a small museum). Renovated in 1776 by monk Bartholomew (the same monk who founded Saharna); closed under Soviets, revived 1994.

Legend places Ștefan cel Mare's marriage to Maria Voichița here; another legend places the tomb of Orpheus at the foot of the waterfall.

Strict dress code — men in trousers (no jeans or T-shirts), women in long dresses with headscarves (no trousers). Wraps are available at the entrance.

A steep ~20-minute descent reaches the cave chambers. Waterfall hike from the monastery: ~2–2.5 miles each way; the Țipova river falls 16 m into the Dniester.

FAQ

Day trip or overnight?+
Day-trip is feasible (Soroca alone, last bus 18:00); overnight makes sense if you want sunset at the Candle of Gratitude and a sunrise fortress visit.
Can I just walk around Roma Hill?+
Yes — no fee, no guide required. Treat it as a residential neighbourhood: photograph buildings, not people without asking.
Saharna + Țipova in one day from Chișinău?+
Yes by car or organised tour (~8 hours); not realistic by public transport without an overnight.
What is the monastery dress code?+
Saharna: covered shoulders and knees + headscarf for women. Țipova is stricter — long dresses + headscarves for women, trousers (no jeans) for men. Wraps available at the entrance.
What should I call Roma Hill?+
Locally Dealul Țiganilor on signs; in conversation use "Roma Hill" or "Roma neighbourhood." Avoid the English slur "Gyp" and adjacent constructions.
Best months?+
April–October. The Candle stairs and Saharna/Țipova trails are exposed; July–August are hot and busy, May/September are the sweet spot.
